GIANNI SCHICCHI

Giacomo Puccini with Italian libretto by Giovacchino Forzano (1918)

The costumes in Gianni Schicchi follow 1918 Fashion, but each have a peculiar flair inspired by the Italian Futurist movement. The quirky colors, inventive lines, and unconventional accessories, while true to Futurist ideas and the work of fashion designer Erté, are also reminiscent of the characters of Commedia Dell’arte which the opera is stylistically based on. The color palette is a nod to the dark, brooding colors indicative of Dante’s Inferno, found in the colors of the painting 'Pieges de Guerre' by Futurist Giacomo Balla.
